“Ordinary and standard blank sheets of paper, both new and found forms serve as basic units for the works of Julia Nema. Her reliefs and collages survey the visual frameworks of tracing through the conditions, shades, and relations of whiteness. By mixing paper and porcelain, Julia Nema creates her proprietary paperporcelain medium in which the characteristics of both symbolic components are combined, layered or extracted. Her forms emerging out of nothingness, gentle and spontaneous gestures of folds, scratches and cuts, and structures salvaged from their original function manifest the vulnerability of our visual and written culture—our own vulnerability.”
